White-nose Syndrome (WNS) is a disease that is killing millions of bats across North America since being discovered in the winter of 2006/2007. Infected bats often have white fungus growing around their muzzle —the “white nose” that gives the disease its name— as well as on their wings, tail and ears. As of summer 2020, bats in 35 states and 7 provinces have been confirmed with the disease. An additional four states have the fungus that causes WNS.
Minnesota is home to eight species of bats; four migrate south for the winter and four hibernate in the region. These hibernating species are the ones most vulnerable to WNS: Little Brown Bat, Northern Long-eared Bat, Tricolored Bat, and Big Brown Bat. All four are state-listed as Special Concern Species and the Northern Long-eared Bat is federally-listed as Threatened, in large part due to the devastating effects WNS has had on their populations.
