Sacred Art Activism

Everyone is an artist, prophet and mystic! I attempt to fuse these callings together in my art work of over 35 years. My iconography expands from two to three dimensions by making larger-than-life statements with papier-mâché masks and giant puppets for parades, conventions and other events across the country.

Sacred Art Activism is a phrase I developed while writing my 2010 doctoral dissertation for the University of Creation Spirituality on large visuals utilized in community ceremonies, demonstrations, and celebrations.

Art Background: Masters degree in studio art from the University of Wisconsin, Superior, with thesis show, Dancing with Divinity, featuring a larger-than-life ancestor puppet series, masks, and traditional orthodox icons from my work with Sr. Mary Charles McGough and the Andreyevs' Prosopon School of Iconology.

Undergraduate work was in the studio art and theater design departments of the University of MN Twin Cities campus and a physical theatre mask program at Chabot College near Oakland, with internships at the Minneapolis Children's Theatre & School and the Jungle Theatre. My knowledge of "cheap, Earth-friendly art" was initially gleaned living four years south of the border, working with papier-mâché and experimental theatre experts of central Mexico and observing Dias de los Muertos (Days of the Dead) rituals in the mid-1980s with artist, Lynn Davis.

I have always been inspired by Bread and Puppet Theatre (1963) and In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (1973).
